Fishing report:
January-February 2007;
The Jacobs Group had a bang up time the last week
of January fighting over 100 tarpon and landing 13 up to 140 pounds.
They caught snook and loved fishing the jungle, see guest comments
section.

Lots of tarpon in the river mouth. Seas have been
high but when our boats were able to go out most guests hooked
up and landed tarpon. Snook fishing during January was tough but
Hal managed to get a nice one, picture below, lots of smaller snook,
1-8 pounds were caught with the larger ones enjoyed by all at the
lodge.

Hal's snook on left Noel's snook on right
Caught 1 dorado, 1 tuna, 1 wahoo, 1 sail, tarpon plus
others this am 3/16/05. So many snook we are no longer taking them
in.

The Calba Are Here Good Eating For All!!

The Fall is Here and the Tarpon
are all over!!
Hello Hal,
Just writing a quick note and please forward to Ray & Penelope(sorry
probably spelt wrong) and Rafa on my first but not my last trip to
the lodge during the second week of September. The trip was beyond
all my expectations!! From the friendly feeling I received at the airstrip
when your not sure what to expect from the jungle you just flew into,
to the hard working kitchen and maid staff who are so creative and
talented who provide prompt and courteous service, to the guides who
are so knowledgeable in handling the boats and most important finding
the tarpon and providing non stop action with a creature that I
have a new found respect for as pound for pound the one of the
toughest species of fish I have ever caught( Rafa, Thank you and yes
I was sleeping in the bow when I missed a few of those fish, Ha Ha).
The CD of pictures is fantastic and tells a story of our trip
all on its own. Thank you Dad and Silver King Lodge for an experience
of a lifetime that I will definitely be enjoying again in the
future.
Yours
Truly,

Hal,
Thanks for assisting me with my missed connection from Atlanta to San
Jose. I hooked up in Miami on American airlines and was only
three hours behind my original flight. So I would like to thank
you again for your assistance with relaying the info. to the guys with
ground transportation in Costa Rica.
Please relay my thoughts to Ray at the lodge. My guide
Rafa did an outstanding job in locating and hooking up many large Tarpon. He
really put in a fine effort and was very friendly and knowledgeable
about the River and Ocean fishing. Rafa was one of the
best boat handlers I have ever had the pleasure of fishing with, I
have fished with many guides under many different conditions but Rafa
was the BEST guide that I have EVER fished with. In three days
we sighted over thirty large Tarpon, hooked eighteen and brought eight
to the gaff. For a novice Tarpon angler I was very pleased!! I
am hoping to put together another trip to Silver King next winter with
several of my Brother Firefighters from upstate New York. Thanks again
for everything.... Silver King Lodge is definitely a "Top
shelf" fishing adventure and a very comfortable and friendly place
to enjoy some of the best fishing in Central America! Thanks
again. Sincerely, Joel T. Montross

A note to a friend
Dr Gil Eisman is a long time friend and guest of
Silver King Lodge. He has battled a debilitating disease the whole
time that he fished at Silver King. Twice a year he came and fought
the mighty Silver King and won the battle more times than not. This
Spring was his last trip and we want him to know that he will be
missed. Gil we want you to win this battle and come back, there
is a big one just waiting for you.

Tuna All Over
The Doug Schaeffer Group Caught These One Morning

Fishing is still red hot. Max Withrow, Gary Cullip,
Randy Wooten, and
John Bishop landed 14 tarpon this morning before 11AM.
They lost count
of the ones that got away. Many tuna, and wahoo are
still being caught
with a dozen or more sails banging baits but not landed.
Mr. Fuller had
enough tarpon and went up the river to relax and fish
for smaller fish.
He caught and landed a tarpon in the 120 to 140lb range.
He was back at
the lodge by 10AM. enjoying a bloody mary. All for
now. Ray
Hi Hal
Thanks for at very nice trip to
the lodge. We had a very great time and Mikkel Jermiin - my brother
- caught this beautiful sailfish while we were fishing tarpon of
shore. Ray told us to send the fish to you so that you could put
in on your web site. I send you two fotos so that you can choose
the one that suits the site the best.
Thanks again for a nice trip

Scott Greathouse with a 200 pound Tarpon caught
on a fly.

Dear Hal/Ray,
Just a quick thank you for helping arrange my trip
and ensuring I accomplished my goal, (catching
tarpon). The food, accommodations and the company were great, most
importantly the guide Clifford got the job done and provided good
company for 3 days. I won't complain about the weather, I am just
grateful for my good timing and hope to make a September trip in
the near future. I have attached a picture, not the best, I will
work on Clifford's photography skills next time. Thanks I enjoyed
the trip.
Best Regards,
Bob

Nice tarpon Bob
2/14 A Wonderful Valentines
Day Present
6 boats jumped over 100 tarpon between 2pm and 5pm.
one boat with a
lone angler jumped over 30 fish landing 6. most boats
ran out of lures
and were making lures from busted up ones. great day.
Fishing is outstanding. The weather is and has been beautiful. The
Janne brothers, from Denmark,
caught a nice sail fish plus many huge jacks and several tarpon.
The mote
group have all caught tarpon.. One tarpon was over 140lbs. They
are all smiles and planning to come back.. Not being experienced
fisherman they have lost many tarpon but had the thrill of jumping
lots and lots of tarpon.
From Holland;
Dear
Hal,
First
we want to thank you for our beautiful trip in september this
year. We enjoyed it very much. The flyfishing was realy good.
It is a great fishery those yellow belly tarpons on the flyrod.
When I see those pictures and the movie my wife made I still
can not imagine how we boated those giants of tarpons on the
flyrod. My muscles are still hurting when I am thinking of the
fight for more than 3 hours from that 150 pounder. I think I
was a very lucky guy for hooking 22 of those giants and boated
13 of them on the flyrod. For me it was my new personal record
on the fly.We also want to thank Clifford for the guiding. He
is a realy good guide. I
hope we will meet again and I hope you enjoy the pictures.
With
friendly regards from Holland,
Franné en Joke Lucassen

September 2002
The
fishing has gone wild from the get go. Tarpon like crazy. Everyone
is getting 10 to 15 hookups per day. Wahoo, tuna, king mackerel,
cubera snapper to 66 lbs. they are everywhere. The weather has
been perfect. What
a September!!
The fall fishing should be absolutely the
best for the rest of 2002.
Giant snook fishing this past spring was like the
old days SUPER! SUPER!
Calba Fishing was great last year and should still
be great this coming November and January.
Ilene and Hal boated over 60 in a few hours and brought back 19
for the table this past November.

Ilene with 2 for the Table
September, October and November were months that will
go down as some of the best fishing in the last 20 years.

George and Gail
George Malina and Gail Knight - from Aurora, Illinois
If you hear a reference to "The Kings" of
the Silver Kings, they are probably referring to George Malina and
Gail Knight. These two
fishermen have been fishing tarpon, in the Caribbean basin, for over
30 years. They have
fished from Honduras to Rio Parismina. I personally have never met
anyone more serious about tarpon fishing than these guys. George
isn't satisfied with "over the counter" lures. He
hand sands his lures and custom paints, each one. Hand
tying fin and feather in intricate patterns that look more like a
work of art than fishing lures. but,
it's not all in vain. In
October of 1998 George and Gail jumped a whopping 84 tarpon, landing
26in just 4 days of fishing. This September, the two, almost beat
their own record with 72 jumped and landed 22. They
jumped 32 in one day, and landed12. How
do they do it ? I don't
know! But, a combination
of custom rods, top of the line reels, hand made lures and a great
attitude certainly contributes to their success. By the way, they are two fine gentlemen, as well. They
have been fishing here for over 5 years. Their
dedication and accomplishments, in the sport, are worth noting.

Jimmy Connors tripletail
Jimmy Connors, not
the tennis star but definitely the tarpon star, fought his first
tarpon and thought he went to fishing heaven. Jimmy is from
Long Island and has spent every free moment fishing for stripers
and blue fish. They are tough fish but like pan fish next to
the tarpon. His trip this October included over 30 Tarpon Landed,
at least 4 tripletail dozens of huge jacks and a n assortment of
other species. Not bad for a first timer!!
Big hit at Silver King Lodge - Yvonne the bartender's
funky monkey drink.
She won't tell us what she puts in it but it's fabulously refreshing!
New guide at Silver King Lodge, Ramon Cunningham, already
becoming one of the most requested guides. We are proud to have him
with us.
The 10 foot crocodile is back and putting on a show for our clients.
See her at the front dock, greeting the customers. We are not sure
whose mouth is open wider.
Mid season - we would like to thank all the agents and customers for
choosing Silver King Lodge as one of the most requested tarpon
destinations. Thanks to you, we will be making this another banner
year!!
Flyfishing clients bring their own line
- I would suggest 550 and 850 grain sinking. the problem that we
are encountering is that due to the tarpon break-offs we cannot keep
up with enough supply of line at the lodge.
I would recommend them bringing at least
2 lines. One of each would be fine.
Jack O'Neil from Alaska hooked a nice 22 pound snook in the
bar mouth.
Brad Tracy, Greg Maura and Don Fowler could
not believe their eyes. They had never seen so many schools of
tarpon in their lives. The tarpon were jumping, schooling, having
a great time. Brad broke one of our ugly stick fly rods on a foul
hooked tarpon. It took him over an hour to bring him in despite
the break in the rod.
First Cobia
caught on the east coast of Costa Rica = Stephen Kryger of Jackson,
Missouri caught a 45 pound Cobia on 20 pound test line. His guide
Marvin had never seen one before and didn't even know if it would
be edible. When he brought it back to the lodge, it was a first
site on this coast for all of us.
Max Heatherington
missed his chance at a 40 pound snook. Max thought he had a tarpon.
Even when the snook jumped out of the water he still thought he
had a tarpon on. All the boats around him were yelling at him to
take it easy with the big snook, but in all the excitement, he
lost his fish. Max is coming back next year to see if he has another
chance at the one that got away.
We were happy
to see Jay Lloyd come back again, this year. Were even happier
to hear that he will be coming back, next year.
Once you catch
a tarpon, the feeling is exuberant and infectious, all you want
to do is to catch more. These Silver Kings are one of the most
beautiful and exciting fish one will ever fish for.
Fantastic, fantastic, fishing!!
Silver King Lodge thanks the
Apex group for choosing our lodge as their company's fishing/vacation
destination.
The group of 28 fishing at
Silver King Lodge during the March 19-21 week. Everyone was hooked
up. Double, triple hookups, at the same time not uncommon. Some
boats boasted raising 10-15 fish in one day, landing five of them.
When they left the fishing did the unpredictable, it got better,
no, it got awesome.
The fishing the weather has
been beautiful. Balmy, sunny, in the 80's, the perfect Caribbean
weather.

Howdy folks,
Just wanted to tell you again how much fun I had at
your Lodge this last
week.
Couldn't believe I was actually cold when I got back
home (Portland) and it
was 70 degrees (warm for this part of the country).
Thanks again,
Chuck

More Tuna from Jim & Bill
Lets not forget THE

Something Different a TRIPLE TAIL on
a FLY

Kiyotaka's triple tail
Let's not forget the Silver King. The
tarpon fishing has been great and should continue to be excellent
through June.
Kiyotaka and Mika from
Japan, fly fished for the Silver King. The Silver King beat them
7 to 1 with Kiyotaka landing 3 on a fly with one broken rod and Mika
landing 1. The tarpon were all in excess of 100 pounds.

Dave Morel from The Salt
Water Sportsman Magazine, boated a tarpon estimated to be in excess
of 190 pounds in addition to his tuna above.
Congratulations to Ilene for landing
3 tarpon in the 60 to 75 pound range with no help from Marvin, her
guide, her 40 pound yellow fin tuna was the largest she ever caught..
The afternoons have been unbelievable with multiple
hook ups, doubles and triples creating total havoc on the boats.
Schools of tarpon numbering in the hundreds or more, turning on all
at the same time is something to experience.
